    Zanzibar holiday experiences

    • Discover the old forts and lively markets in the capital, Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage listed site and the heart of this vibrant island. Get lost in the maze of medieval streets and alleyways, and marvel at the merchants houses with their balconies and the grand House of Wonders.
    • Once you have exhausted the history of Stone Town, head to a rooftop restaurant and enjoy the views with a refreshing glass of freshly-squeezed fruit juice or a bite to eat. If ultimate relaxation is what you require after a busy session of sightseeing then head to one of the palm-lined beaches where you can soak up the sun, snorkel in the colourful coral reefs and enjoy the sound of rustling palm leaves, and the Indian Ocean lapping at the sand.
    • Known as the “spice island” (and for good reason!) it is well worth taking a tour of the traditional farms growing cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and nutmeg, all of which have a huge influence on the local cuisine.
    • Everything from silk clothes to spices, car spares, fruits and vegetables can all be found in the dark, narrow passageways of Darakani market. Beat the crowds and the heat by heading there first thing in the morning. Alternatively, skip the market and have an appliquéd silk cushion or throw made to order by one of the very talented Zanzibari women. Influenced by Swahili and Arabian pattern, you can often see patterns in the cushions that have originated in carvings in and around Stone Town.
