    • The country’s capital, Budapest, is a wonderful place to base your holiday as it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. In fact, Budapest itself is a World Heritage Site thanks to its historic buildings and sheer beauty. Other UNESCO sites in the country include the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, the Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma and the Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs to name but a few.
    • If you are lucky enough to be travelling in Hungary mid-June, you should definitely visit the Tisza River to see the tiszavirágzás — where swarms of mayflies appear, looking like flowers. It’s a gorgeous phenomenon, especially as the population is only just booming again after almost completely disappearing. Horse riding can be one of the best ways to take in Hungary’s natural beauty, and excursions are offered so that you can see the open country at its finest.
    • There are more than 1,000 thermal springs in Hungary and many have been transformed into spas and baths. One of the most impressive is the Szechenyi baths in Budapest. They’re the largest of their kind in Europe and occupy a fabulous Modern Renaissance building in Budapest City Park.
    • Hungarian cuisine is delicious and is usually rich and spicy. Many meals will be flavoured with paprika, which is the national spice and dishes usually feature meat or river fish served with vegetables, rich sauces and dumplings. Desserts often feature chocolate and nuts and are perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth.
