From archaeology and Buddhist sculptures, to anthropological galleries and the best collection of bronzes in India, this museum is not to be missed. The Kapaleeshwarar Temple is impressive and includes the main elements of Tamil Nadu architecture, such as the rainbow-coloured gateway tower, the pavilions, it is dedicated to the most popular deity in India, Shiva.
    • Watch the sun rise or set along the 3km Marina Beach and watch cricket matches taking place, kites being enthusiastically flown, and fisherman selling their catch. Heading to the beach in the early morning or evening means you miss the most intense heat of the day and are able to enjoy this beautiful scene. Head to the southern end to the newly refurbished lighthouse and take the lift to the top for panoramic views of the city and the beach.
    • The best restaurants, cafés and shops are in the leafy suburbs of Chennai. Nungambakkam, Thyagaraya Nagar, Alwarpet and Velachery and Guindy are all excellent areas to explore when looking for somewhere to eat. Make sure you try a Thali style meal and meat eaters should check out restaurants that serve Northern Indian style tandoori dishes.
    • If you are after something special to take home with you then look for shops that sell all kinds of Kanchipuram silks, wedding saris and silk dhotis. The city is also famous for its dazzling gold jewellery, encrusted with precious and semi-precious stones, particularly rubies.
