    Chiang Mai holiday experiences

    • Temples: Apart from its natural beauty, the heart of Chiang Mai is the Walled City. Here you’ll find around 30 temples in a wide variety of styles and decorated with exquisite carvings, gold filigree and pagodas. The most famous of these temples is Wat Phra that Doi Suthep, which stands on a mountainside and can be seen for miles. The 300+ steps leading up to the main temple can be a challenge, so take the cable-car up to the top for a more relaxed way of seeing this incredibly ornate temple, without running out of breath. Another must-see is Wat Phra Singh, which dates to the 13th century. A more tranquil atmosphere can be found at Wat Jed Yod, which is famous for its ancient trees, and the fact that it is an important location in the legend of Buddha’s path to enlightenment.
    • Local festivals: The city is renowned for its festivals all year round. The Flower Festival takes place during the first weekend in February, when the entire centre is filled with the fragrance of blossoms. A parade winds through the streets, and roses are handed out to the crowds. The celebrations carry on into the evening when the flower queen is finally crowned. Other festivals include celebrations of the ancient martial art of Muay Thai, handicrafts festivals, the Loi Krathong and Yi Peng Festivals.
    • Gardens: The city is renowned for its gardens. One of the best is the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, Thailand’s oldest botanical garden. This stunning collection is dedicated to the conservation of the country’s native flowers and plants.
