Highlights / General details
In this excursion, we will discover the Southern part of Catalonia, the Tarragona region, a land of contrasting landscapes: a beautiful untamed interior with unique valleys and mountains, which face long beaches of fine sand which comprise the tourist haven of the Golden Coast ("Costa Dorada").
We will take the motorway and at 10:30, we will arrive in Tarragona where we will begin the guided visit which will immerse us in the ancient city of Tarraco as we discover its splendid Roman past. Tarragona was declared a World Heritage site in 2000 due to the city's historical value as well as the excellent conservation of its monuments.
We will start by viewing a large archaeological scale model with all the details of what the city was like in the Roman age. This image will be very helpful to subsequently recognize the different monuments in the visit to the sites.
“Tarraco”, Capital city of the “Hispania Citerior” region, reached its zenith in the 1st Century B.C. when Emperor Augustus established his residence in the city during a time, which converted it into the center of the Roman Empire.
In the visit to the city, we will observe its walls, built with large stone blocks which still border part of the modern city. We will discover the ruins of the provincial forum with its terrace structures where the provincial administration buildings and religious temples were located. In the lower terrace, we will enter the circus interior, the only visitable circus in the world. Our route will conclude in the amphitheater, in front of the sea, with excellent views of the Mediterranean and the city's typical postcard.
After the visit, everyone will have free time to explore the city and at 12:45, we will travel to the coastal town of Cambrils where we will have free time to eat lunch, stroll or enjoy its beaches.
After lunch, we will travel to our next destination. At 16:00, we arrive in front of the majestic Cistercian Abbey of Poblet, founded in 1150 and declared an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991. At present, it is the largest inhabited Cistercian Abbey in Europe.
Prior to entering the Monastery, we can already perceive its magnitude especially in the presence of the walls which surround it. The corresponding guided visit will describe its interior: the kitchen, the refectory, the heater, the parlor, the library, the chapter house, the spacious rooms, all with exquisite conservation. We will also be pleasantly surprised by the magnificent cloister of two floors.
We will leave Poblet to visit Montblanc, arriving at around 17:15. On the way to Montblanc, we can't help but notice the stunning fortified walls built in the 14th Century; to this day, they still have an excellent conservation condition which encloses the entire historical city center. It has been declared a National Historical-Artistic site since 1948.
During the stroll through its Medieval city center, we will discover its rich architectural heritage with every step and we will understand why it is considered to be one of the most beautiful Medieval villages of Catalonia.
