We’ll begin our Copenhagen tour near the characteristic yellow houses of Nyboder, a famed district that was built by King Christian IV in the 17th century to house the growing Royal Danish Navy. We’ll walk down the small streets of Nyboder, before reaching Kongens Have (the King’s Garden). Here, you’ll hear the story of how the park came to be, and how it was one of the first public parks in the world. We’ll also pass by more recent social housing, and discuss how such developments are a symbol of the changes Denmark went through after World War II.
As we search for more Hygge, we’ll continue to wander some of Copenhagen’s oldest streets, before reaching Strøget, the longest pedestrian street in the world. We’ll pause at the Stork Fountain, where you will hear about the anti-establishment cultures the city has hosted over the years. We’ll also stop at a little garden café and settle in for a cup of coffee.
From there, we’ll pass by the castles that house government offices and parliament and talk about both the formal and informal ways that Denmark is governed — and how the country has succeed in creating a system with a very high degree of trust and confidence. You’ll get to see the lovely and hidden library garden, where Copenhageners visit when they need a quiet moment in the middle of the city. We’ll also pass by the impressive Royal Library before finishing our tour in a street café, where you will experience Hygge in its purest form.
